In 1997 marc jacobs, a 34-year-old designer from new york is named as artistic director of louis vuitton with the principle aim: to develop the house’s ready-to-wear line. here we have exclusive images of the preparations for his first collection at the louis vuitton ateliers in paris, alongside his long-term associate, robert duffy. the presentation of this autumn/winter 1998-99 collection amazed the audience due to its seriousness, its neutral tones and precise cuts. with this wardrobe, marc jacobs wanted to showcase fashion in its entirety, highlighting the clothes. the gamble paid off. interviews robert duffy: marc is a creator, purely a creator, and i like to make things happen. i realise his ideas; if he believes in something and he wants something to be finished and out there for people to buy or for people to see, i make that happen. marc jacobs: i feel very good here, for me this is an opportunity that is very, very exciting; it’s very difficult to express what an exciting opportunity it is as an american to work for a prestige house and a prestige name like louis vuitton; it’s a huge deal. as someone who grew up wanting to be a fashion designer, this is quite an important job that i got and all i want to do is to do a good one. louis vuitton does not represent a history of couture or ready-to-wear or anything to do with women’s or men’s clothes and so the idea of creating an image in terms of clothing and ready-to-wear is quite an extraordinary responsibility and of course i want things to be quality, i want them to be chic and i want them to be contemporary but in terms of creating one look for louis vuitton, it’s a big challenge and a big responsibility. bernard arnault : at louis vuitton, what i think it very important is the completely unique mix of timelessness, the product and modernity. this is exactly what marc jacobs allows us to perfect. music free of right/ bandit & nikit 2012
